Each topic contains specific learning objectives, cultural information, several units of study and a vocabulary checklist for the topic. A study unit consists of a section of new words, a section of language points, activities and sometimes writing practice. The content exhibits slight New Zealand oriented features, however, this may add to students' interests rather than discouraging them from learning. The books contain a great deal of useful realia such as a newspaper article, a cartoon strip, a business card, a train timetable, a train ticket, a New Year's card, posters and advertisements.

These materials give students opportunities to experience natural authentic language. The book also contains cultural information, such as how to address people, how to use gestures and so on, which is necessary for students to communicate with the Japanese successfully.

Although it is designed for adult learners, some units are useful for secondary level programs, and the language can be modified easily. The explanations are clear, and the activities and exercises will help students self-check, consolidate and extend their learning. Groups of kanji are presented in relationship to topics or functions such as hobbies, ceremonies, travel, feelings, and so forth. Each lesson presents authentic texts from newspapers, advertisements and signs, along with reading and writing exercises and questions about the text.

This resource is also available on Seiko CAI software. The lessons introduce 37 situations related to life in Japan through basic, beginning level sentences. This resource employs the direct method teaching students through the use of the Japanese language. There is no English translation in the student texts. To be effective, the texts should be used with the accompanying audio cassettes and overhead transparencies. The teacher's guides are an excellent source of ideas about teaching methods and learning activities.

The explanations are concise although it may not be necessary for beginning level secondary school students to learn about Japanese phonetics to this extent. Since the vocabulary presented in the exercises following each presentation section is not categorized into themes or topics, and there are no illustrations accompanying the words, practice work may become meaningless for younger students. Teachers should make the practice lessons lively with supplementary materials such as visuals and realia. When all the hiragana characters are mastered there are numerous exercises for students to increase their knowledge of Japanese structures and to perfect their writing style.

In those additional sections words are categorized into topics such as verbs, numerals, Japanese holidays and main cities in Japan. These drills develop students' writing skills and will reinforce and consolidate the script learning. This program is recommended for self-study or distance education. Unlike traditional texts, this self-study resource permits students to begin reading and writing from day one.

Four or five new katakana are introduced in each of 20 lessons. The book provides information about more than 1, katakana words loan words which originate from languages other than Japanese, mainly English , pronunciation tips and usage notes. There are games and puzzles that help students remember the words in their proper contexts and a review section at the end of the book.

Each lesson consists of dialogues, key words and expressions, drills and exercises. Since the emphasis is on listening skills, students are asked to listen to the audio cassettes many times until they understand what is being said. There is a separate grammar book, and each chapter contains a review section and information about pronunciation and writing symbols.

There are also assignment sheets that could be used as self-achievement tests. In each of the 12 lessons, students are introduced to an aspect of contemporary life in Japan and then provided with a series of language learning exercises based on that topic. Each lesson consists of a text in Japanese Japanese characters and romaji , an English translation, a vocabulary guide, brief explanations of grammatical points and a few exercises.

Lessons often include statistical graphs and charts and informal Japanese proverbs related to the topic. The text is designed for the intermediate level, but beginners could use it by focussing on the cultural content and doing only selected linguistic exercises. Vocabulary and grammar indexes are provided.

The text includes short sentence exercises and ideas for written compositions on various topics. The lessons in this resource will help students use the Japanese language more accurately, both orally and in writing, and provide a review of vocabulary, sentence patterns and grammar.

This program is also a suitable learning resource for distance education. Information about the Japanese language and culture is introduced through discussions of topics that interest young students and are understandable to them; for example, school environment, the family, sports and leisure, food and drink. Interest is also stimulated through the use of full-colour cartoons, illustrations and high quality photographs. Students are also invited to participate in a series of imaginative activities. Hiragana is introduced from the first unit of Level 1 and katakana is introduced at the beginning of Level 2.

The units are organized in such a way that a teacher does not have to follow the content page by page. Another weakness may be the treatment of Japanese culture. Kimono : Levels 1 and 2 focusses mainly on aspects of the youth culture. Traditional cultural aspects are not treated in depth. It is necessary to supplement the resource with materials from other sources that contain such topics as social and political systems, the traditional arts and literature, relationships between Japan and other countries, and other topics if it is to be used with older students.

This material would be suitable for self-study since the users can select four levels of difficulty romaji , hiragana , katakana, kanji , enabling learning to occur at their own pace. The importance of learning the culture is also emphasized in this program. Cartoons are used to stimulate students' interest in aspects of Japanese culture. The text keeps written explanations to a minimum and provides no English translations.

Instead, numerous illustrations and signs are used. The audio cassettes feature authentic spoken Japanese with various sound effects to create a context. The learning activities, which engage students individually, in pairs or in groups, can be expanded from aural comprehension to oral and written production, depending on the need.

There are also Japanese lessons with sub-sections for elementary, upper- beginning, and intermediate or advanced students. There are journal columns on news digests, questions and answers about living and studying in Japan, and other information regarding opportunities to study Japanese. Articles are written in kanji and kana with an English translation in the lessons section.

Students work at their own speed according to their abilities. The student text and audio cassettes provide a variety of listening exercises related to telephone numbers, time, dates, money and other daily life situations involving numbers. Part I presents basic numerals and their practical application. Part II uses actual statistics and data.
